182 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENTREPRENEURS Robert W. DeVore celebrates longstanding success in business, architecture and the nonprofit sector. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and later Harvard University, where he discovered a passion for architecture. After graduating cum laude with a BA in architectural sciences, he studied at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, ultimately achieving an MArch. He was also awarded the Appleton Travelling Fellowship, which he used to study Buddhist architecture in Asia for a year. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. DeVore joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard as an engineering officer. In 1967, he became an associate partner at Perry Shaw Hepburn and Dean, Architects. His work for the firm included several high-profile public projects, including three prestigious Harvard hospitals. At the age of 29, Mr. DeVore founded his first company, Health Systems Inc., which offered building design, finance and management consulting services to over 500 clients across the United States. After selling the company to Numed Inc., he was appointed as the company’s president of worldwide hospital management division. Driven by a passion for philanthropy, Mr. DeVore used funds from the sale to establish an educational foundation in his hometown to support college and trade students. In 1999, Mr. DeVore joined the Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions as senior vice president of corporate strategy and special projects. He served until 2013, developing a database, algorithms and tools to reduce preventable errors and deaths. Despite being a career businessman, he chose to work for Harvard’s nonprofit insurance company because he believed he could make a difference in the medical insurance industry and patient safety. Mr. DeVore is dedicated to increasing educational accessibility and attainment, and he sits on the board of advisors of the Florida Gulf Coast University Water School and The University of Vermont SPARK Technology Commercialization Fund. Because of his work in health care, the Institute of Healthcare Improvement invited him to become a member of their contract faculty in 2017.
