His extensive career includes diverse leadership roles including housing programs director for the United States Department of Agriculture and team development at Citibank, Flagstar Bank and his current employer, Michigan First Credit Union. He is active in the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), where he collaborates with local entities in each state to promote homeowner-related legislation and expand access to credit for aspiring homeowners nationwide. Michigan’s heritage as the birthplace of mortgage lending in the U.S. is reflected in the local presence of the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association and its local chapters. Since 2018, Mr. Spencer has served as the president of the association’s southeast chapter. Mr. Spencer began his education at Michigan State University, where he studied interdisciplinary humanities and had a formative early-career experience working in sales from the age of 16. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in 2002 and entered the mortgage industry as an account manager at Ameriquest Mortgage. He discovered a genuine passion for the industry and began to develop his skills as a leader and financial services expert. As an industry veteran, he imparts his knowledge and skills by training others and emphasizes the value of peer learning and mentorship in fostering excellence. Mr. Spencer chose the mortgage industry for its opportunities to support others in reaching their personal and financial goals. As mortgage branch manager at Michigan First Credit Union, he focuses on building a business that transforms lives and contributes to the success and happiness of others. To supplement his field experience, he earned a Master of Science in finance and a Master of Business Administration at Walsh College in 2010. Among Mr. Spencer’s many professional accomplishments, he is proud of obtaining a certified mortgage banker (CMB) designation, the field’s highest credential, in 2022.
