57 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT Laurence Overmire is an accomplished poet and author who has spent his life and career in the performing arts and arts education. He began his education at Muskingum University, obtaining a BA in theatre arts and a BS in psychology in 1979. In 1981, he earned an MFA in acting at the University of Minnesota and won a Bush Fellowship to become a professional actor with the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. Mr. Overmire began his successful acting career in New York City, performing in the Broadway production of “Amadeus,” the New York Shakespeare Festival, and the television soap operas “All My Children,” “One Life to Live,” and “Loving.” He also served as a teaching artist at the Lincoln Center Institute and Manhattan Theatre Club. He moved to Hollywood in 1991 and joined The Writer’s Lab as an executive producer, working with prominent writers, actors and directors to develop high-quality scripts. Moving to Oregon in 2001, Mr. Overmire began to pursue his literary interests. His award-winning poetry has since been published in hundreds of journals and anthologies worldwide. In 2015, he was named a Reader’s Favorite World Poet by Writers & Artists Publishing, New York, in association with the University of Oxford. He is the author of 15 books, including a philosophical work titled “The One Idea That Saves The World: A Message of Hope in a Time of Crisis,” calling for wisdom and compassion in addressing world issues. Mr. Overmire is particularly proud of his seven epic genealogy books dedicated to preserving history for future generations. For example, his book, “A Revolutionary American Family: The McDonalds of Somerset County, New Jersey,” details the long-forgotten history of one family’s experiences with George Washington’s army in Pluckemin (Bedminster), New Jersey. Mr. Overmire retired from Oregon Children’s Theatre after 20 years of teaching public speaking and theatre arts to students in grades K-8. Today, he directs plays and serves as a poetry editor for “The Peregrine Muse” and “Poets International.” In his spare time, he enjoys reading, researching the American Civil War, and traveling with his wife, Nancy.
