423 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition TECHNOLOGY With more than 35 years of practiced expertise to his credit, Steven Mikes has established himself as a proven leader in the aviation industry. Now retired from full-time work, he previously excelled at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he participated in and led a variety of innovative projects. A talented student with a gift for problem-solving, he began his vocational journey at West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science, a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, and a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics, all magna cum laude, in 1989. After graduating, Mr. Mikes joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, working on hardware development and testing. In the mid-2010s, he shifted his focus to software development, operating as a level three flight software engineer before his retirement in 2024. Throughout his time with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Mr. Mikes contributed to numerous spacecraft and rover projects, including early models of the Mars rovers. He also handled a diverse range of development tasks, including creating software of subsystems early in his career, and he was involved in simulation software and testing projects in addition to his hardware development roles. To commemorate his excellence in the field, Mr. Mikes has been recognized with many honors. Working for the Avionics Division, he received several leadership awards including two Nova Awards. Likewise, he has received numerous group commendations from NASA and a 2014 Mariner Award. Mr. Mikes credits his success to his dedication to his work and the collaboration and support of his colleagues. Accounting for his accomplishments, he is particularly proud of his contributions in helping to put rovers on the surface of Mars. He looks forward to enjoying his retirement and dedicating more time to volunteering, collecting coins and pursuing home improvement projects.
