She began her career in 1990 as a customer service representative and staff accountant for Home Federal Savings Bank. While with the bank, she earned an associate degree in business administration and management from Hagerstown Community College and a Bachelor of Science in accounting and business management from Frostburg State University. She later returned to Frostburg State University, completing a Master of Business Administration. In 1995, Ms. Smith became the vice president of First Data Corporation, a position she maintained until 2019. In 2007, Ms. Smith joined Fiserv Inc., where she currently serves as vice president of finance heading the settlement controls and solutions department. She manages the daily movement of between $35 and $40 billion, ensuring accuracy across departments and accounts, oversees new projects and clients during the onboarding process, and coordinates the development of internal systems for new products and services. She has made a significant contribution to the company in creating a consistent control process and environment, including the creation and execution of global policies. Currently, she is working on developing a system to automate these controls and reconcile them. In the coming years, Ms. Smith aims to implement the system she is currently developing to automate internal processes and continue to build on advances in machine learning. Having spent considerable time working in the private sector, she hopes to give back by mentoring younger generations of professionals so that they can realize their full potential.
