She has built a reputation as an innovative and engaging educator, researcher, trainer and manager with broad experience motivating, mentoring and leading diverse groups in academic, government, retail and nonprofit organization settings. Since 2022, Dr. McGaha has served as the executive director of the Taiko Community Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the traditional Japanese art of taiko drumming. With nearly 600 members, the organization’s mission is centered on empowering individuals and advancing the practice of taiko. Prior to her current position, Dr. McGaha was the director of education for Parkinson Wellness Recovery and an alumni lead research fellow at the University of Phoenix, where she earned an MBA in 2009 and a PhD in management and organizational leadership in 2018. She also holds a BA in linguistics from the University of Arizona. As the executive director of the Taiko Community Alliance, Dr. McGaha possesses both taiko experience and business acumen. She has played taiko for over 30 years and is the former director of Suzuyuki-kai MoGan Daiko in Tucson, Arizona. She is also a published scholar, with works such as “A Non-Traditional Validation Tool: Using Cultural Domain Analysis For Interpretive Phenomenology,” which was featured in the International Journal of Social Research Methodology in 2019. Alongside her scholarly pursuits, she wrote a self-help book, titled “Dr. Widow: A Book of Two Journeys ... and How To Survive Them Both,” under the pen name Zarina Garrison in 2020. Looking to the future, Dr. McGaha intends to continue her involvement with the Taiko Community Alliance, committed to its mission and to solidifying its operational sustainability. She also seeks to overcome the common nonprofit challenge of month-to-month financial struggles, ensuring the organization can thrive.
