139 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition EDUCATION EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF PHILOSOPHY Clark University Chestnut Hill, MA SCHOOL COUNSELOR (RETIRED) Chester Upland School District Fort Myers, FL JUDITH WAGNER DECEW, PHD After earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Rochester, Dr. Judith Wagner DeCew became interested in philosophy. She taught high school mathematics for three years before returning to school for a master’s degree. A year into her time at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, she was invited into the philosophy PhD program and subsequently earned a doctorate in 1978. After nine years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. DeCew began teaching at Clark University in 1987. She has received numerous honors from the institution, including the Senior Faculty Fellowship Award for exemplary excellence in teaching and research in 2010 and the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships in 1993 and 1994. Well-regarded for her scholarly output as well, she authored “Unionization in the Academy: Visions and Realities” and “In Pursuit of Privacy: Law, Ethics, and the Rise of Technology,” as well as over 50 articles in philosophy journals. In addition to her many years teaching at Clark University, Dr. DeCew also taught at Harvard University and Wellesley College. Now retired, she boasts over 50 years of collective experience in philosophy. Patricia “Trish” Thompson Gillen is a retired school counselor who dedicated three decades of her career to supporting the students and faculty of Chester Upland School District in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Gillen grew up attending international schools in the United States and Chile, learning Spanish and French, and she hoped to pursue a career in education. She ultimately completed a BA in psychology and education at Immaculata College and completed an accelerated MA in education guidance and counseling at Villanova University. Mrs. Gillen then taught for three years before transitioning into counseling, where she found her passion for helping youth navigate the challenges of school, emphasizing social, emotional and academic growth. Throughout her career, she held leadership roles in numerous associations and school initiatives, and she remains active in her community as a volunteer for local church and school district projects. Since retiring, Mrs. Gillen has traveled extensively with her husband, and she looks forward to further exploring the world in the coming years. She now lives in Fort Myers, Florida.
