140 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Dr. Bonita Hampton is a longtime member of the State University of New York (SUNY) system who has been a visiting scholar at SUNY Oswego since 2001. Her teaching and research focus on race, class, gender and sexuality in education and culture, and she has published on the role of faith and religion in the lives of African American women living with HIV/AIDS. Currently, she teaches a course titled “School Pedagogy in Social Justice,” and she is passionate about empowering future educators to develop critical thinking skills, resiliency, and independence. Dr. Hampton joined the SUNY system in 1975 as an adjunct professor at SUNY Buffalo; an alumna of the school, she achieved a PhD in American and women’s studies in 1998. To commemorate her achievements, she has received numerous awards for her community activism and academic work from the National Women’s Studies Association and Everywoman Opportunity Center. She credits her success to the support and influence of her many mentors and her family. She is particularly grateful for the inspiration of her five children, Kevin, Tyrone, Regina, Chris, and her late son Kenneth. Over her 40year career, she has taught at many institutions, including Antioch University, Johns Hopkins University, Lehigh University and Kutztown University. Since 2019, she has served as a professor and founding director of the DeSales University higher education graduate program. Dr. Kenney earned a BA in psychology at Mansfield University in 1980 and an MEd in counseling at Temple University in 1984. In 1992, she graduated from The George Washington University with an EdD in counselor education, specializing in higher education, human development, and marriage and family therapy. Dr. Kenney recently retired from full-time work to concentrate on her independent consulting firm. A leader in higher education and counseling, she has published numerous book chapters and articles. She also co-authored “Counseling Multiracial Families” and co-edited the forthcoming Routledge International Handbook of Interracial Relationships and Mental Health. To commemorate her accomplishments, she has received numerous honors and awards for her work and service.
