161 Millennium - Eighteenth Edition ENERGY, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING Utilizing her extensive experience in the energy sector, UshaMaria Turner has excelled as the vice president of external affairs and the chief sustainability officer of the Chesapeake Energy Corporation. In external affairs, she manages governmental relations encompassing both state and federal spheres, community outreach and engagement involving philanthropy, and communication and sustainability. She thrives in the dynamic and demanding work environment and takes pride in contributing to a company and industry that impacts everyday life for many individuals. From a young age, Ms. Turner gravitated toward the sciences. Her father encouraged her to pursue engineering, a path she followed while at Texas A&M University. After earning both a BS and an MS in environmental engineering, she began her career as an associate engineer at TXU Power. There, she remained from 1999 to 2012 while ascending through roles of increasing responsibility, including energy policy and large asset development. A new opportunity for advancement took Ms. Turner and her family to Oklahoma, with Oklahoma Gas & Electric to lead their environmental and energy affairs department. She was recently recruited by Chesapeake Energy Corporation, which represented a significant opportunity to transition from a career focused on electricity to natural gas, a field closely related to her previous experiences in the power sector. Her extensive background in public policy, stewardship, sustainability and community engagement made her an ideal fit for this position, and she joined the company in 2022. Moving forward, Ms. Turner aims to leverage her extensive experience in the energy sector to explore new challenges and broaden her expertise. She finds great satisfaction in her current role, particularly in mentoring a young and diverse group, including single mothers navigating early career challenges. Despite her deep commitment to the energy industry, Ms. Turner is interested in expanding her skills in areas such as complex global supply chains and international business. She values continual growth and problem-solving, reflecting her engineering mindset and desire to stay engaged and motivated by new challenges.
