In 2023, he retired as a fire captain in order to dedicate himself to working with youth and the African American Firefighter Museum. Mr. Burton is also the founder and director of the Junior Firefighter Youth Foundation, where he delivers engaging and informative educational sessions to students of all ages. Thanks to his vast experience and deep expertise in the field, he has earned a teaching credential and teaches part-time at two local high schools. Alongside his many years of experience, he holds a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from Columbia Southern University. Passionate about his work, Mr. Burton intends to ensure the African American Firefighter Museum succeeds independently after his retirement and is satisfied with the knowledge that he has left a positive legacy. In 1997, Captain Brent F. Burton co-founded the African American Firefighter Museum, an institution dedicated to telling the stories of pioneering Black firefighters from segregation to integration to the present day. Since the museum’s establishment, he has served as both the vice president and the president, and in 2014, after the passing of the museum’s original historian, he took on the role of museum historian. He has since worked tirelessly to preserve the museum’s rich history and ensure its legacy lives on for generations. As a child, Mr. Burton lived near a fire station and was enamored by the bright red fire trucks racing to and from the station. His passion for emergency services led him to participate in the Los Angeles Police Department’s and the Fire Department’s youth programs as an explorer scout and in various activities at the training academy. His cousin, a member of the Los Angeles City Fire Department, further inspired him to pursue a career in firefighting. Despite concerns about the segregation and integration of the fire department, he resolved to become a firefighter and serve as an advocate for Black firefighters, and in 1985 he joined the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
