CHWHA partnered with state and federal legislators to address this issue. In 2023, CHWHA worked hard to pass a North Dakota state resolution requesting federal assistance to help keep the wild horses in the park. With the help of their followers, CHWHA was successful in continuing to raise awareness about the plight of the park’s wild horses. A year later, the organization received confirmation the National Park Service had withdrawn its efforts to remove the horses. Looking to the future, Ms. Kman plans to continue her work on the legislation to protect the park’s herd. She strives to secure state and federal legislation for the horses in the park, aiming to prevent a repeat of the challenges they faced with the National Park Service. In addition, she is pursuing funding to establish a wild horse sanctuary in North Dakota. As the president of Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates (CHWHA), Christine M. Kman spends her time advocating for just under 200 wild horses in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Her advocacy work includes regular communications with state and federal legislators, their legal team, CHWHA’s government relations team, and the press. To increase awareness, she engages with the organization's followers on social media and holds educational Zoom meetings to share information and help educate others. In addition to her years of experience as an advocate, she holds a bachelor’s degree in writing from DePaul University. In 2019, Ms. Kman and her husband opened Chasing Horses, a modest retail store that pays tribute to the horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Noticing their impact on the park’s visitors, and because of growing concerns about the park’s management of the wild horses, they decided to form CHWHA, a nonprofit organization, in 2021.
