Simultaneously, in 2020, Ms. Bernard became part of an interim executive leadership team. She was charged with heading the organization, managing the budget and overseeing daily operations throughout a restructuring initiative while also spearheading a harassment procedure change management initiative. In her final role, she was the deputy general counsel for labor and employment. She left the Sierra Club at the end of 2022 to refocus on her family. Following her father’s passing in January 2023, Ms. Bernard found renewed purpose through her faith, leading her to create Faith 1st Consulting, a management consulting and executive coaching firm. Looking to the future, she is focused on expansion and growth for Faith 1st. She aims to develop the organization further, expand the team and secure resources to continue carrying her vision forward. After graduating from Grand Valley State University with a BBA, Katrina M. Bernard, JD, CPC, began her career in human resource management, ultimately leading her to pursue a law degree. She received a JD from Michigan State University College of Law in 2006 and subsequently practiced labor and employment law at Varnum Law. She also enlisted in the Air National Guard, serving for eight years. Later, she moved to Washington, DC, to work as an attorney for the Social Security Administration, focusing on labor and employment matters. During her eight years with the agency, she advanced to a senior-level position as an attorney advisor, playing an integral role in the refinement of the agency's harassment procedures. Ms. Bernard left federal government service at the end of 2017, subsequently working in labor relations and as a deputy HR director at Sierra Club, a nonprofit organization. There, she worked closely with management and union leaders to facilitate positive union-management relations, in addition to leading management through a historic unionization initiative and subsequent bargaining process. This led to the first chapter employee unit collective bargaining agreement.
