36 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION WALLACE D. LOH, PHD PRESIDENT (RETIRED) University of Maryland Seattle, WA For over five decades, Dr. Wallace D. Loh has excelled as a law professional and academic administrator, largely specializing in law and psychology. At the onset of his career, he pursued a formal education, originally earning a BA in psychology at Grinnell College in 1965. He subsequently continued his studies at Cornell University, where he received an MA in psychology in 1967. After participating in a research assistantship in psychology at the KU Leuven in Belgium between 1968 and 1969, Dr. Loh returned to the United States and ultimately achieved a JD at Yale University and a PhD at Michigan State University. After working for a law firm in San Francisco, Dr. Loh realized that while he enjoyed the field of law, operating within it was not the best utilization of his talents. As one of the very few Chinese American lawyers at the time, he felt it was important for him to prepare new generations of law professionals. Thus, he left his law practice to teach at the University of Washington. Dr. Loh subsequently rose to become the dean of the university’s School of Law, making him the first Chinese American law school dean in the United States. He went on to serve as the provost of The University of Iowa from 2008 to 2010 before joining the University of Maryland, where he served as the institution’s president until his retirement in 2020. As part of his work at the University of Maryland, Dr. Loh notably secured substantial new federal funds, which provided a strong financial foundation for ongoing and future programs. Through private fundraising, he also helped guide the university’s entrance into the Big Ten, a coalition of universities that hosts the Big Ten Conference, one of the oldest collegiate athletic conferences in the United States. Dr. Loh strived to help the university excel not only in athletics but also in increasing academic collaboration between member universities. However, he faced challenges during this time, particularly in navigating the complexities of regional tensions. Despite these challenges, he excelled in achieving his goals, leaving a longterm positive mark on the school’s community.
