Tulp recognized a growing demand in the medical industry and pursued a career in medical technology, earning an associate degree in medical psychology at Carnegie-Mellon University. Following the encouragement of several physician colleagues, he furthered his education at the University of Vermont, completing a BS, an MS in physiology and biophysics, and a PhD in medical pharmacology. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Vermont, he embarked on a successful career in academia. Dr. Tulp began teaching in 1981, taking an associate professor position at Colby College. In 1983, he moved to Drexel University, becoming a full professor and remaining with the university for over 20 years. His active involvement in publishing and research contributed to his teaching success, keeping him abreast of the latest developments in medicine. As a teacher, he strives to make complex concepts approachable to students, simplifying subjects such as biochemistry from a medical perspective. This approach resonated with his students, with one former student expressing her appreciation for his style over 30 years later. In 2003, Dr. Tulp established the University of Science, Arts and Technology on the island of Montserrat, aiming to address educational needs in the region. Driven by a vision for academic excellence and global standards, he drew inspiration from other renowned universities — such as his alma mater, the University of Vermont — and created an institution offering a unique and rigorous curriculum. Unlike many other medical schools in the Caribbean, the university developed a comprehensive academic platform that prepares students for all aspects of a medical career. Dr. Tulp is a prolific writer, having published over 800 articles in research science and professional journals. Furthermore, he collaborates with other professionals on book projects, and he recently published a book chapter on the interrelationship between cortisol and insulin and the ways in which these hormones influence metabolism.
