Leroy Tolles III is a registered professional engineer in California celebrating more than 45 years of industry expertise in structural engineering and construction. He is best known for his work on seismic retrofitting and restoration of adobe structures and has worked with organizations, including the Getty Conservation Institute, as part of the Getty Foundation, and the National Parks Service. Inspired by his passion for helping others and his desire to make a positive impact on society, he pursued a career in engineering that ultimately saw him earn a PhD in structural engineering at Stanford University in 1989. Dr. Tolles began his career in the early 1980s as a structural designer for William S. Kaplan, Structural Engineer, in San Francisco. In 1982, he became a civil engineer for Failure Analysis Associates, and in 1984, he became the principal of ELT & Associates, where he continues to work with clients on earthen and adobe building engineering, retrofitting and new construction projects. From 1986 until 1992, Dr. Tolles concurrently served as a senior civil engineer for the FTI Corporation. As one of the industry’s leading voices on the seismic behavior and retrofit design of adobe and earthen building construction, Dr. Tolles has published and spoken extensively on the subjects. To wit, he notably coauthored several major publications with the Getty Conservation Institute, in addition to numerous journal articles. As part of his commitment to his industry, he has also been a member of the Structural Engineers Association of California and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. In light of his fulfilling career, Dr. Tolles credits his success to the many collaborators and mentors who have shaped his work. These include Stanford University professor Dr. Helmut Krawinkler, conservator Edna Kimbro, structural engineer Frederick Webster, and historical architect Anthony Crosby. E.
