87 Millennium - Nineteenth Edition GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY As a member of the city council in Ventura, California, since 2022, Liz Campos is responsible for engaging with the community, connecting with individuals and groups to better understand their needs and unique interests and proposing policies to positively impact the community. She takes pride in being one of the few city council members in California who uses a wheelchair — a result of an injury to her spinal cord and brain. Ms. Campos’ unique perspective enriches her service to the community, and she recognizes the need for greater representation of individuals with disabilities in leadership roles and aims to inspire others to pursue similar paths. Prior to pursuing a career in government, she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at San Francisco State University and a master’s degree in literature at California State University. Reflecting on her career, Ms. Campos is notably proud of her commitment to improving community health through advocacy. She identified a significant issue in the location of a compressor station processing methane gas, which was built across from a century-old elementary school. This proximity saw many students facing serious health problems, including leukemia and asthma. In response, she partnered with two community organizations to address the issue, first approaching SoCalGas and then the California Public Utilities Commission. After six years of advocacy, they are nearing a decision on the potential relocation of the compressor station. She views this journey as a major achievement, as her efforts will lead to a healthier environment for future generations of children. Moving forward, Ms. Campos is optimistic about her chances for reelection to the city council, as she truly cherishes her role and the work she does for her community. While she is not currently considering a bid for higher public office, she is receptive to potential future opportunities with the county supervisors or within the state legislature.
