As fire chief, she wrote grants for community emergency preparedness and to equip high school sports programs with automated external defibrillators, increased access to emergency medical services for the community, and improved patient outcomes in cardiac arrest due to cardiovascular disease. As a nurse, she advocates for individuals lacking access to adequate health care, ensuring they receive necessary care at appropriate medical facilities. Reflecting on her accomplishments, Dr. Elgin is proud to have served on the National Advisory Council for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as part of the first advisory council under former President George Bush. In 2016, she received the Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare Award. Looking to the future, she strives to leave a legacy of patient advocacy and healthcare equity, particularly for marginalized communities and children. Since 2023, Dr. Angelia Mary Elgin, RN, has served as an acute care nurse practitioner with the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. In her position, she provides care for patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries. Additionally, she has taught in the nursing program at Chamberlain University LLC since 2022. Beginning her own education at St. Louis Community College, Dr. Elgin earned an associate degree in paramedic technology in 1996 and an associate degree in nursing in 1998. That same year, she graduated from Sterling College with a BSBA in executive management. Returning to school later in her career, she attended the University of Phoenix, earning an MA in management and organizational leadership in 2006. To further enhance her career experience, she began studying at Maryville University of Saint Louis, where she earned a BSN in 2015 and a DNP in 2020. Dr. Elgin began her career as a paramedic and firefighter with the University City Fire Department, subsequently becoming a critical care registered nurse at St. Louis University Hospital (now SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital) in 1998.
