Dr. Brazel began working at Arizona State University as an assistant professor of geography in 1974. He subsequently became the geography department chair in 1991. He then served as the director of the School of Geographical Sciences in 2007 before ultimately retiring in 2011. Moving forward, Dr. Brazel hopes to be remembered for his commitment to honest research and his drive to push the boundaries of his field. He believed in making contributions that extend beyond existing knowledge, and he achieved that through direct, hands-on discovery in the field. While he admits that data analysis and artificial intelligence are useful tools, he highlights the importance of fieldwork. At the age of 83, he continues to actively review articles, demonstrating his ongoing engagement and contribution to the academic community. Dr. Anthony James Brazel has cultivated a fulfilling career as a notable geographer and dedicated educator. To wit, he is one of the first geographers to model aspects of alpine climatology using digital and numerical surface climate models. He also completed extensive research on dust storms and desertification of the Southwestern United States. Following his retirement in 2011, he was named a member of the emeritus faculty at Arizona State University, where he taught for over three decades. Prior to his career, Dr. Brazel attended Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where he earned a BA in mathematics in 1963 and an MA in geography in 1965. While at Rutgers, he connected with a professor who offered him a position in Alaska as a research assistant, which launched his career in Arctic outline research. He spent much of his career on Arctic research, continuing his education at the University of Michigan and graduating with a PhD in geography with an emphasis on climatology in 1972.
