Afterward, she joined the Mobil Technology Company, where she served as a research associate between 1996 and 2000. Throughout her career, Dr. Cheng specialized in heterogeneous catalyst evaluation and application for refinery and petrochemical processes. She holds 71 United States patents, many for hydrocarbon, hydroprocessing and catalyst composition technologies. Furthermore, she authored and co-authored numerous scholarly works throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with much of her work focused on different chemical studies. Dr. Cheng was prominently published in the Energy & Fuels Journal and the Journal of Organic Chemistry. Originally from Shanghai, China, Dr. Cheng began her vocational journey as a student at Peking University, where she earned a BS in chemistry in 1981. After immigrating to the United States, she continued her education at Lehigh University, where she achieved a PhD in organic chemistry in 1986 and completed postdoctoral research on coal chemistry in 1988. In honor of her achievements, Dr. Cheng has been presented with numerous accolades, including R&D Patent Awards from Exxon Mobil Corporation for 2007 to 2008, 2009 to 2010, and 2011 to 2012. She also received a Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Award in 2013. Though she is retired from full-time work, she remains deeply dedicated to her field, continuing her participation as a member of the American Chemical Society since 1983. Attributing her success to her fruitful and honest relationships with her colleagues and peers, Dr. Cheng is particularly proud of her previous involvement in several key commercial processes for the Exxon Mobil Corporation. Dr. Jane C. Cheng has accrued over 30 years of experience as a skilled research scientist.
