By the age of 15, he had begun his lifelong hobby of vehicle restoration, which further encouraged his independent studies. Seeking a higher education, Mr. Phillips attended the University of Alabama, earning a BSEE in power systems, computer design and programming in 1977. While his initial goal was to pursue a path toward biomedical engineering, he subsequently chose a route focusing on pure engineering. Thus, in 1982, he ultimately achieved an MBA at Jacksonville State University. At the onset of his career in 1977, Mr. Phillips joined Republic Steel as an electrical engineer, departing in 1984 to become a project engineer for Vulcan Materials Company. He considers his time with Vulcan Materials Company to be the highlight of his career, fondly recalling his work on the design and construction of an international production facility. Likewise, he is grateful to have been involved in the process of upgrading the facility, which significantly increased production and modernized its workflow. He served as a project engineer for Vulcan until 1996, when he was named the manager of engineering, a position he held until leaving the company in 2011. In his personal time, Mr. Phillips is dedicated to community service, inspired by his mother’s commitment to outreach. He is a former den leader, troop committee chair and Cubmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and a longtime construction volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, among other commitments. He credits his success to his work ethic and the support of his family. In the coming years, he looks forward to increasing his community work in his retirement. James N. Phillips is a retired electrical engineer celebrating 44 years of distinction in industrial power and energy projects. Prior to his retirement in 2021, Mr. Phillips served as a senior electrical engineer for Yates Engineers LLC. He originally joined the company in 2011 and excelled as a leader throughout his tenure. From an IT manager at Screenvision to the director of solutions at Brand Networks, and from a product manager at ITX Corp to her current role as a program manager in advanced optics engineering at Corning, she has remained a steadfast champion for usability, accessibility and inclusive innovation. In recognition of her work, Ms. Oare was named a finalist for the Emerging Technology Women’s Award. Outside of her career, she is a dedicated community volunteer and a certified yoga and reiki practitioner who brings calm clarity to complex challenges. She often credits her resilience and values to the support of her parents. Roberta J. Oare is a trailblazer in product leadership and a passionate advocate for accessibility, with over 30 years of experience turning bold ideas into inclusive, human-centered solutions. In 2024, she founded Beyond Limits Platform LLC, a groundbreaking educational company dedicated to teaching elementary-aged students the value of inclusive design through interactive curriculum, hands-on workshops and digital adventures. Ms. Oare’s mission is to help every child feel seen, heard and empowered in digital spaces. Her work brings accessibility principles to life in ways kids can grasp and enjoy, whether they are navigating a web-based game or learning how thoughtful design can open doors for everyone.
