138 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING at Vanderbilt University in 1975. He subsequently received a master’s degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Georgia in 1979 and a master’s degree in optical sciences from the Optical Sciences Center in 1981. He ultimately achieved a PhD in optics at The University of Arizona in 1984. Throughout his career, Dr. Stuhlinger has developed a reputation for creativity, innovation and a willingness to take on complex tasks. He holds six patents, including one for the phased-array telescope he designed, and he is a longtime member of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Dr. Stuhlinger credits his success to his commitment to learning and passion for his work, and he is proud to have contributed to many unique projects over the course of his industry tenure. He hopes to continue working with and supporting the careers of junior engineers and optical technicians in the coming years. Dr. Tilman W. Stuhlinger draws on over four decades of experience as an optical engineer and the founder and vice president of Ruda Optical. The company specializes in engineering, design, and testing of optical components for the aerospace, defense and health care industries. Dr. Stuhlinger’s interest in optics was sparked by his father, who worked for NASA. By the age of ten, he had independently built his own slide projector, demonstrating an early aptitude for engineering. Dr. Stuhlinger began his career working parttime with Ruda Optical in 1984, departing shortly thereafter to join a Swiss company the following year. From 1986 to 1994, he excelled as a staff engineer for Talandic Research Corporation. He and three other former Talandic engineers then formed Ruda and Associates, re-establishing the optical engineering branch company. Since 1994, Dr. Stuhlinger has taken on leadership and optical engineering responsibilities, developing lenses and optical systems in collaboration with the company’s in-house team. Recently, the company was renamed Ruda Optical. In pursuit of a higher education, Dr. Stuhlinger originally earned a BS in physics and astronomy TILMAN W.
