Prior to joining the NFHA, Ms. Reid furthered her advocacy and policy expertise as the senior director of advocacy at the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. There, she oversaw state legislative criminal justice reform efforts and day-to-day grassroots advocacy operations, including mobilizing members and others in support of the organization’s state policy priorities. Adjacent to her primary endeavors, Ms. Reid plays a key role in the civil rights community. She has long promoted civic awareness, political engagement and advocacy throughout the Washington Metropolitan Region, particularly advocating for policies and legislation that promote equal housing opportunities, criminal justice reform and voting rights. In 2019, she was appointed by former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam to Virginia’s inaugural African American Advisory Board, where she co-chaired the Committee on Public Safety & Criminal Justice. Ms. Reid is a graduate of George Mason University with an MPA and a BA in government and international politics and economics. She is also a 2014 graduate of the Minority Political Leadership Institute, a collaborative initiative of the Grace E. Leadership Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Legislative Black Caucus. Looking ahead, Ms. Reid is dedicated to working collaboratively on social justice issues, such as fair and affordable housing and criminal justice reform. She aims to ensure that institutions uphold core values regarding the treatment of people of color and address past discrimination. Monica L. Reid is a skilled director of policy and advocacy with over 18 years of professional experience providing public affairs coordination, advocacy and consulting focused on social justice issues. Since 2018, she has served as the principal owner and chief executive officer of Miss-U-Gram® LLC, a patented social media platform and e-commerce site designed to help individuals cope with loss. The platform provides a global solution for memorializing loved ones, offering sympathy gifts, sharing condolences, and supporting affiliate marketing services with purpose. Beyond her business leadership, Ms. Freudenberg is an international keynote speaker on grief and legacy. She is also a dedicated member of Rotary International, having notably served as the president of one of District #7680’s clubs in 2024. Furthermore, she is a proud Paul Harris fellow. She has also volunteered for five years with The American National Red Cross and actively contributes to charitable causes through Prosper for Purpose. Earlier in her career, she was a licensed esthetician, co-founding Patty’s Place Hair Salon in 1990 and managing the business until 2023. With a career rooted in personal development and emotional wellbeing, Ms. Freudenberg holds a New York State vocational license in human resources and multiple certifications in life coaching, leadership and HR management. Ms. Freudenberg is also an accomplished writer, having authored 2023’s “Live Your Legacy: A New Spin on Mourning” and contributed to the “Warning! Children Are Not Weapons!” anthology, which became an international bestseller and received the James Madison Award. She also publishes Legacy Cafe, a grief recovery newsletter series. Ms. Freudenberg has received numerous accolades, including the Jennifer Award and Engagement Award from District #7680 Rotary Club and the MVP and Manager Awards from the PICTV Network. In 2024, she was nominated for the Hustle Award for her continued innovation and service.
