155 Millennium - Twentieth Edition SOCIAL WORK, PUBLIC SERVICE, NONPROFIT AND HUMANITIES legislative advocacy efforts, advocates for the organization’s policy positions, maintains relationships with government officials, and collaborates with industry and non-governmental organization (NGO) partners to support progressive fair housing and fair lending policies at the federal and state levels. Prior to joining the NFHA, Ms. Reid furthered her advocacy and policy expertise as the senior director of advocacy at the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. There, she oversaw state legislative criminal justice reform efforts and day-to-day grassroots advocacy operations, including mobilizing members and others in support of the organization’s state policy priorities. Adjacent to her primary endeavors, Ms. Reid plays a key role in the civil rights community. She has long promoted civic awareness, political engagement and advocacy throughout the Washington Metropolitan Region, particularly advocating for policies and legislation that promote equal housing opportunities, criminal justice reform and voting rights. In 2019, she was appointed by former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam to Virginia’s inaugural African American Advisory Board, where she co-chaired the Committee on Public Safety & Criminal Justice. Ms. Reid is a graduate of George Mason University with an MPA and a BA in government and international politics and economics. She is also a 2014 graduate of the Minority Political Leadership Institute, a collaborative initiative of the Grace E. Leadership Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Legislative Black Caucus. Looking ahead, Ms. Reid is dedicated to working collaboratively on social justice issues, such as fair and affordable housing and criminal justice reform. She aims to ensure that institutions uphold core values regarding the treatment of people of color and address past discrimination. Monica L. Reid is a skilled director of policy and advocacy with over 18 years of professional experience providing public affairs coordination, advocacy and consulting focused on social justice issues.
