91 Millennium - Twentieth Edition LAW AND LAW ENFORCEMENT programs in collaboration with state and local agencies. As part of these endeavors, Mr. Caldwell places a special emphasis on helping to reduce street violence through intervention and diversion programs. Mr. Caldwell’s commitment to service was shaped by his godfather, Donovan Blythe — some of his earliest experiences in community outreach were working alongside him, running youth basketball camps. This led to the creation of the Second Chance Program, which brought underserved youth from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Mateo, California, for basketball camps and to attend sports games at Stanford University. The program eventually grew into a partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America with a city-sponsored after-school program, which remains active today. In 2007, Mr. Caldwell took on dual roles as a care response manager for the Community Response Network, where he operated until 2013, and as the deputy director of San Francisco’s Street Violence Intervention Program, where he remained until 2019. As part of his vocational journey, he also pursued a higher education. Mr. Caldwell initially studied at Diablo Valley College in 1993 before transferring to San Jose State University, where he ultimately achieved a BS in criminal justice in 1996. In recognition of his dedication to violence prevention, Mr. Caldwell has received awards from Nike, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the NAACP and the San Francisco Department of Public Health. He credits his success to his resilience, openness to learning from others, and dedication to his vision. Mr. Caldwell hopes to see the programs he created expand to a national model over the next decade.
