130 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine MEDICINE, HEALTH CARE AND WELLNESS MONICA Q. AKINS, RN, BSN REGISTERED NURSE Central Florida Black Nurses Association of Orlando Inc. Ocoee, FL Monica Q. Akins is a registered nurse with Orlando Health, where she has cared for patients in multiple specialties since 2008. Inspired by a lifelong calling to health care, she began her journey at North Florida Community College, completing certified nursing assistant training in 2001. She earned her Florida certifications as a nursing assistant and home health aide, gaining early hands-on experience in patient care. Committed to lifelong learning, Ms. Akins advanced her education at Florida A&M University, where she actively served on the Student Nurses Association Community Service Committee. In 2008, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, expanding her scope of practice and preparing for a versatile career in nursing. Over the years, Ms. Akins has provided care in diverse settings, including medical-surgical, medical-telemetry, inpatient surgical, outpatient surgical, behavioral health, observation and progressive care. Since 2023, she has excelled in an ambulatory outpatient cardiac care setting, earning recognition for her compassion, attention to detail and strong leadership. In her current role, she oversees patient and family education, coordinates with multidisciplinary teams and supports continuity of care. Looking ahead, Ms. Akins plans to pursue advanced education and credentials in cardiology and ambulatory medicine. She also aspires to pursue leadership in her educational goals, preparing to expand her influence in health care through teaching, mentoring and program development. Beyond her clinical contributions, Ms. Akins is a lifetime member of the National Black Nurses Association and the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Alumni Chapter. She has served as president of the Central Florida Black Nurses Association of Orlando Inc. since 2024. She considers this role one of her proudest achievements, as it allows her to champion advocacy, mentorship and service.
