While he accepted director emeritus status in 2019, he continues to lead as a board member for the World Bird Sanctuary and the Harris World Ecology Center. In recognition of his critical work shaping the cultural role of zoos, Dr. Miller has been the recipient of honors, including an Emil Dolensek Award, a Murray Fowler Award, and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Most recently, he was named The Ohio State University’s 2023 Alumni of the Year. Dr. Miller attributes his success to his parents’ support and his ongoing love of animals and the natural world. In the coming years, he hopes to use his influence to push for more research and policy unity between North American and European professional associations. Outside of work, Dr. Miller enjoys spending time with his spouse, also a veterinary surgeon, and their dogs. Los Angeles and the Mayo Clinic, and he was the first to explore potential causes of the condition in addition to clinical management strategies. In 2004, Dr. Miller transitioned into executive leadership when he was named director of the St. Louis Zoo’s WildCare Institute, rising to become the face of its conservation and partnership efforts for the next 15 years. As director, Dr. Miller developed the zoo’s field conservation program to a budget of $2 million allocated to global projects, including an initiative in Madagascar that benefited local youth in addition to the environment. He is proud to have created lasting change in the St. Louis Zoo’s mission, transforming it from an exhibition space into a sustainable conservation and education program that he hopes will continue for generations.
