15 Millennium - Twenty-first Edition ACADEMIA, EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES Phillip J. Bowman has accrued over 45 years of experience as a proven academic leader. He is an emeritus professor at the University of Michigan, where he taught theoretical and applied social psychology from 2006 to 2024. Furthermore, he was the founding director of the school’s diversity think tank, the National Center for Institutional Diversity, which he led from 2006 to 2013. Dr. Bowman is well-regarded for his voice on racial and ethnic diversity in public policy and higher education. To this end, he has participated in research initiatives of the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Science Foundation. In pursuit of his own higher education, Dr. Bowman attended Northern Arizona University on a basketball scholarship, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Afterward, he continued his education at the University of Michigan, where he completed two master's degrees before ultimately achieving a PhD in social psychology in 1977. He remained at the school as an assistant professor and research social psychologist after completing his doctoral studies, departing in 1984 to accept a full professorship at Northwestern University, where he taught for the following decade. Dr. Bowman subsequently spent 12 years at the University of Illinois before returning to the University of Michigan in 2006. Ever committed to his profession, Dr. Bowman has proudly participated as a fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the American Psychiatric Association. To commemorate his many years of academic service and exceptional contributions to the school and his field of study, he has been honored with numerous accolades. Among these, he is the namesake of a lecture series at the University of Chicago. He also received the W.E.B. DuBois Distinguished Scholarship Award from the American Educational Research Association in 2016 and the Moody/Monts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
