165 Millennium - Twenty-first Edition SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING Joan Werth Callahan is a retired consultant and project manager, celebrating over 35 years of success in the technology, health care and manufacturing sectors. She began her career with a Bachelor of Science in international economics from Georgetown University and started working as a CNC programmer for Reed City Tool & Die Corporation in 1979. This role led to a position with Boeing, where she spent over four years as a planner in the Commercial Airplane and BMAC divisions, helping to build the first 757 and 767 airplanes. Throughout the 1980s, Ms. Callahan continued to work in manufacturing engineering and production, spending two years as an advanced manufacturing engineer for the Sunbeam Appliance Company before moving to the Skil Power Tool Company in 1987 as a senior advanced manufacturing engineer. Over the next decade, her deep knowledge of design, manufacturing and industry trends helped her rise to become the company’s director of market research and forecasting. During this time, she completed a Master of Management at Northwestern University. In 1997, Ms. Callahan pivoted to the health care and medical device sector, initially as director of forecasting for Covance Central Clinical Laboratories and later as director of operations, departing in 2001 to become director of computer validation services for Theron Inc., consulting at Roche Diagnostics and their subsidiary, Disetronic Medical Systems, where she later became a senior project manager. The 2000s saw her accept leadership roles with health care leaders, including SonarMed, KnowError/Diagnostic ID and the Indiana Health Information Exchange. Following this appointment, Ms. Callahan became a senior project manager with netlogx LLC, working on state government projects, focusing on IT implementations and services for aging and disabled populations. She has been a long-time advocate for people with autism and learning disabilities, driven by her own children’s specialized educational and social support needs. Ms. Callahan retired in 2025. She is proud of her work in managing projects and creating processes to bring new products and systems into being.
