169 Millennium - Twenty-first Edition SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING has played a vital role in managing teams of architects, engineers and related specialists to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies. Her commitment to the department was exemplified when she earned the 15-Year Service Award. Ms. Durda’s career expertise is highlighted by her problem-solving skills, and she has used her abilities to tackle challenges during construction projects. Notably, since joining the Texas Department of Criminal Justice nearly 20 years ago, she has led the development of a program that automated the generation of transmittals for technical reviews, which has greatly improved efficiency. Earlier in her career, she served as the first woman engineer in the southwest region with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In her role from 1986 to 1988, she was responsible for installing radio transmission and equipment for aircraft communications. Following this period, she served as a telecommunications engineer with the FAA until 1995. Other vocational roles to Ms. Durda’s credit also include an academic appointment at the Burleson Independent School District from 1999 to 2005, where she taught mathematics. Prior, she was a marketing consultant for Comtech Inc. from 1996 to 1997 and a senior consultant for Blythe-Nelson in 1998. Highly educated, Ms. Durda holds a BS in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University and several noted credentials, including a professional engineering license, a certified energy manager designation and a green building engineer certification. Ms. Durda is actively involved in her community as a leader within the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 95. She has also donated to auctions to support veterans and their families. Looking ahead, Ms. Durda intends to further her involvement with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and eventually ascend to the role of director of engineering. Demonstrating expertise in engineering principles and applications, Debra K. Durda is the engineering manager and deputy director of facilities engineering at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
