20 ACADEMIA, EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES In 1996, Ms. Hollenbeck joined Minneapolis Community and Technical College (merged by the MN State Legislature) as dean of the Nursing and Allied Health programs, as well as the mathematics and science departments. She oversaw accreditation of the school’s technical and professional programs under her purview, including securing funding and aiding in the design of a new science center. Among her and the science faculty's triumphs during this period was the creation of an AS in Biotechnology program that guaranteed students transfer acceptance into the University of Minnesota's biotechnology major. She retired from deanship in 2009 but remained an active mentor to other deans until 2012. Ms. Hollenbeck has written resources for other deans and was the recipient of a 2010 Instructional Leadership Award from the National Council of Instructional Administrators, among other honors. Janis Hollenbeck is a retired dean at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, where she celebrated 18 years as an administrator overseeing programs in STEM and health care. Drawn to careers that offered her the chance to help others, she initially hoped to become a veterinarian but pivoted to nursing due to the field’s lack of opportunities in large animal practice for women at the time. She completed a Bachelor of Science at Macalester College, focusing on nursing and psychology, and continued her education at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, earning a Master of Science in family nursing and completing additional master’s-level coursework in psychiatric nursing. Ms. Hollenbeck began her clinical nursing career in Minneapolis and, in 1967, as a civilian nurse at an American military hospital in Germany, where she spent the next seven years working in pediatric and neonatal intensive care units. After returning to the United States in 1974, she pivoted to academia, becoming a community college nursing instructor until 1988, when she was named director of Minneapolis Community College's Associate in Nursing program. She remained head of the nursing program for eight years, building a strong base of administrative excellence that would carry her into the next chapter of her career.
