25 Millennium - Twenty-first Edition ACADEMIA, EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES In her roles, Dr. Smith primarily provides educational support to at-risk youths and ensures students receive appropriate academic credit in alignment with their progress. Likewise, she regularly advocates for marginalized students, as she strives to positively impact her field as a whole. Ever committed to her profession, Dr. Smith also remains active as a member of the Alabama State Department of Education. Previously, she taught at the Dothan City Schools and the PASS Academy from 2002 to 2015. At the onset of her career, she excelled in chemical research, operating as a research chemist at Sony Magnetic Products of America from 1988 to 1998. Dr. Smith began her vocational journey by cultivating her own higher education, attending Chattahoochee Valley Community College and earning an associate degree in 1984. She subsequently attended Auburn University, where she received a BS in premedical studies in 1986. Following her time as a research chemist, Dr. Smith pivoted her studies toward academia, as she completed an MEd in secondary education and teaching at Troy University in 2000. She recently completed her studies by achieving an EdD in educational leadership and administration at Liberty University in 2022. In light of her fulfilling career, Dr. Smith has attributed much of her success to her drive to support the causes she believes in, especially those aimed at helping children. In accounting for her accomplishments, she is particularly proud of her time as a chemist, though she is even more grateful to have successfully pivoted into education, where she has helped many children on their own academic journeys. Looking ahead, Dr. Smith hopes to positively improve laws and procedures that influence the lives of students. Dr. Susan R. Smith has accrued more than 35 years of proven expertise in the field of education. Particularly wellversed in educational administration, she has served as an academic administrator at the Southeast Alabama Youth Diversion Center since 2023, having originally joined the organization in 2015 as a teacher.
