123 Millennium - Twenty-second Edition MEDICINE, HEALTH CARE AND WELLNESS Vanique N. James is a pharmaceutical industry professional celebrating nearly 15 years of success in leadership roles. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Alcorn State University and has pursued opportunities for continuing education throughout her career. Ms. James is an alum of the Harvard Elevate Leadership Program and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration at Louisiana State University. Her interest in the pharmaceutical industry rose out of a desire to help others through health care innovation without working in a clinical setting. In 2013, Ms. James stepped into her first management role as a pharmaceutical department manager. She launched her career with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company in 2016, and she remains a manager with the company. Among her successes in the role were leading a project that reduced the cycle time of a major industrial process from eight hours to four, and being one of just six employees to implement the company’s “Quality Conversations” communication initiative. From early in her tenure with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, Ms. James was marked as an emerging leader and selected to cross-train in other facilities. Looking toward the future, Ms. James hopes to complete a postgraduate degree and continue her professional climb in a growth-oriented medical or pharmaceutical company. She attributes much of her success to the support and high expectations of her mentors and managers, who have continuously pushed her to grow and achieve at higher levels. Ms. James believes that centering on patients and longterm benefits are the keys to driving responsible innovation, and she advises others in her field to stay aware of the impact their work can have on others, rather than focusing solely on profit.
