Jones III is highly regarded in the spheres of public health, academia and civic advocacy, culminating in his present role as a board of managers member for the Travis County Hospital District. Since 2017, he has overseen hospital management across Travis County, Texas, and has maintained responsibility for engaging with community bodies to collect information and make recommendations for more equitable and accessible services. Specifically focused on the needs of communities of color in eastern Travis County, Mr. Jones also collaborates with numerous organizations across the education, civic and religious sectors. Mr. Jones previously served as the director of the Department of Public Health for Travis County and the City of Austin, Texas, from 2006 until his retirement in 2017. During his tenure, he helped develop programs to address health disparities affecting several populations, such as people of color, women, individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community, and other marginalized groups. Notably, he has been celebrated for advocating on behalf of these groups before the City Council to secure funding for new programs. Previously, from 1999 to 2006, Mr. Jones served the Department of Public Health as its deputy director and assistant director. Earlier in his career, he delved into administrative work at several Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), where he also taught public administration and political science and served as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Highly educated, Mr. Jones completed coursework toward a doctorate in management and policy, with a major in epidemiology and demographics, at The University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston. He also holds an MPA from the University of Pittsburgh and a BA from Oglethorpe University. Outside his primary duties, Mr. Jones is a member and chair of the advisory committee on the elimination of tuberculosis at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he has secured funding to address tuberculosis disparities among African Americans in the Northeast and southern states. He also supports research charities on sickle cell disease awareness and has earned multiple accolades for his pioneering work. SHANNON W.
