125 Millennium - Twenty-second Edition MEDICINE, HEALTH CARE AND WELLNESS Dr. James H. Lawton is a Podiatric Surgeon based in the Chicago area with 45 years of experience. Now retired from clinical practice, he has continued his professional efforts by providing online consultations, allowing him to remain engaged in patient care and continuing Medical Education. Dr. Lawton holds a BS degree in pre-medicine from the University of Wisconsin- Platteville in 1967. Subsequently, he earned a DPM degree from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago in 1971. Following medical school, Dr. Lawton completed a two-year Surgical Residency at Franklin Boulevard Community Hospital in Chicago, and he was licensed as a Podiatric Surgeon in Illinois, Wisconsin and California. He is Board Certified in Podiatric Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and he served as Board President in 1984-1985. Dr. Lawton is also a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and he held the office of President in 1989-1990. He is one of only six Podiatric Surgeons who have been elected as President of both Surgical organizations in the history of the profession. Dr. Lawton served as a Professor of Surgery at the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, where he taught the Podiatric Surgery Course. His tenure afforded him opportunities to deliver hundreds of lectures nationwide and abroad in Italy. Early in his career, Dr. Lawton was elected to the Board of Directors of the Illinois Podiatric Medical Association, and he served as President of the Association in 19781979. Dr. Lawton served as a clinical teaching faculty member in the Family Practice Residency program at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois, for 28 years, where he integrated a Podiatric curriculum into broader medical education. Prior to his retirement, he was the Residency Director of the Podiatric Surgical Residency/ RRA program at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, which involved mentoring students and postgraduate residents in surgical practice. Dr. Lawton has earned the Henry L. DuVries, MD Award for Excellence in Surgery; a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville; and a Service Achievement Award from the John Barth Foundation at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
