In her role as an educator, Dr. Mossey taught graduate-level classes and provided tutelage and guidance to students from all backgrounds. Previously, she was a professor at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Allegheny Health Systems, from 1986 to 1994. Highly educated, Dr. Mossey first earned a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Holyoke College in 1965 and a BSN from the Columbia University School of Nursing in 1967. After accruing years in her profession, she completed an MPH in 1972 and a PhD in epidemiology in 1976 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which was followed by an MSN in psychiatric mental health nursing from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1993. Impressively, Dr. Mossey’s early research on self-rated health was crucial in establishing a foundation for subsequent research concerning the relationship between self-rated health and various health outcomes. Her study, conducted initially in 1982, demonstrated that self-rated health was a strong predictor of mortality risk among older populations and was the first of its kind to use longitudinal data to predict mortality. Dr. Mossey has been recognized as a pioneer in her field due to her advanced studies. Dr. Mossey maintains professional alignment with numerous organizations, such as the Global Consortium for the Prevention of Depression and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Outside of her profession, she is a sponsor of the National Wildlife Federation, served on the board of directors of Astro Artists, and was a home gardener for food banks in her region. Looking toward the future, Dr. Mossey aspires to write a book on self-rated health and improve society’s understanding and treatment of noncancer pain. Dr. Jana M. Mossey has maintained a strong commitment to teaching, research and public health throughout her career, which has spanned nearly four decades.
