Dr. Alonso commenced her career in 1984 as a research associate at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and went on to serve in the same capacity for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center from 1985 to 1990. Highly educated, Dr. Alonso holds a PhD in microbiology, with a focus on virology, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She previously received a Bachelor of Science in biology, graduating cum laude from the University of the Philippines before pursuing higher education in the United States. She attributes much of her success to her strong organizational skills and proactive approach to her work. Outside of her professional ventures, Dr. Alonso maintains a collection of over 300 orchids, which she began cultivating in 2014. She is the 2025 president of the Atlanta Orchid Society; she began serving as an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society in June 2025. Regarded highly for her expertise in biotherapeutics, vaccine development and manufacturing, and consulting in the biotech industry, Dr. Firelli Alonso accrued 40 years of professional experience prior to her retirement in 2023. In her post-retirement years, she has continued her scholarly work as the founder and principal consultant of ConsultFi Biologics LLC since 2024, where she advises clients, organizes outsourcing workshops and speaks at conferences. Earlier in her career, Dr. Alonso worked at Pfizer as the senior director of external supply from 2009 to 2023. Previously, she held numerous vital roles at Wyeth Vaccines Research. She joined the company in 1996 as a manager and was promoted to associate director in 1998, director I of viral vaccine development in 2001, and director II of development operations and outsourcing in 2004. She remained with Wyeth until Pfizer acquired the company in October 2009. During her longstanding tenure with both companies, Dr. Alonso was instrumental in advancing vaccine research and development efforts.
