After graduating and experimenting with both screenwriting and documentary filmmaking, Ms. Hellmann began working as an assistant film editor at NBC, launching an eight-year career in broadcast journalism. Between 1978 and 1985, Ms. Hellmann served as a producer and a communications training manager at the public relations firm BursonMarsteller, departing to start Fischer-Hellmann Communications. She remains involved with Fischer-Hellmann Communications; however, by the early 2000s, she had turned her focus to writing her first novel. Ms. Hellmann credits the support of a local mystery writers’ group for helping her hone her craft enough to be published by one of the "Big Five" in 2001. She is now proud to be a "senior member" of the group. Ms. Hellmann is a former columnist for Women’s Voices magazine and the longtime host of Second Sunday Books. She has been published by Berkeley Prime Crime (Penguin), Poisoned Pen Press, Bleak House Books and Allium Press. Today, she publishes under her own imprint, The Red Herrings Press. Her novel “A Bend in the River” won the 2021 Chicago Writers Association Best Indie Fiction Award, and her work has been shortlisted for numerous national and regional honors. Ms. Hellmann is active in the Mystery Writers of America, the Society of Midwest Authors and the Chicago Writers Association. She strives to serve as a mentor and example to emerging writers, particularly women. Ms. Hellmann advises aspiring authors to remain flexible and open to change in a volatile industry, and to seek opportunities for visibility and improvement. She looks forward to completing two more books in the coming years. Libby Fischer Hellmann is an award- winning author and independent publishing expert celebrating five decades of success in print and broadcast media. Driven by a lifelong passion for storytelling, she initially hoped to pursue a career in filmmaking.
