By the age of 13, he was writing features for his hometown newspaper, eventually earning a scholarship to West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in journalism. While a student, Mr. Huff served on the sports staff of the West Virginia University Daily Athenaeum, and he accepted a role as a sports editor at the Times West Virginian after graduation. He went on to spend more than 32 years with Wheeling Newspapers, first as a sports editor and later as a columnist for The Intelligencer, and was a byline author for Sports Illustrated. High school sports remained a career-defining passion for Mr. Huff, and he served as a writer for the Conde Nast National High School Preview from 1975 to 2008 and as a high school sports journalist for ESPN from 2000 to 2012. Mr. Huff is a pioneer in national high school sports recordkeeping and a major contributor to the first National Federation of State High School Associations record book. In recognition of his efforts to preserve and promote these records, he became only the second media professional inducted into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Huff is a nine-time West Virginia Sports- writer of the Year recipient and was honored with the West Virginia University School of Journalism’s P.I. Reed Achievement Award in 1999. Although retired, he remained active in the West Virginia Sports Writers Association, serving in various leadership roles. He was named one of the Most Influential People in High School Football History by MaxPreps in 2026. R.
