125 Millennium - Twenty-fourth Edition SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING operating procedures he implemented resulted in the world’s first production facility for metallocene linear low-density polyethylene (mLLDPE) with a negative environmental impact. After four decades, Dr. Lutz has made a significant impact in his industry through the engineers he trained and his accomplishments in the workplace. He has worked with various new catalysts that have enhanced production processes. As a plant supervisor, he explored opportunities to optimize equipment usage. He also successfully led the creation of a new bimodal product to commercialization. Though the challenges he has faced have been complex, Dr. Lutz urges curiosity and care. He approaches his personal life in much the same way, restoring cars and taking on new hobbies like step aerobics, swimming, weightlifting, yoga and cycling. He has participated in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Race Across Iowa nine times. Dr. Lutz admits that once this placement at Braskem is up, he will likely take on a role elsewhere. After nearly 50 years, his work ethic remains strong – and he still genuinely loves his work. Dr. Lutz realized later in life that he is dyslexic. Reading had always been difficult for him, but this became clear when his daughter was diagnosed. As a result, he developed a hands-on approach to his work, enabling him to interact with problems directly. With computers and data as reference tools, he goes into the field, studies the situation repeatedly and works with it until he understands how it behaves. This process leads to deep, working knowledge rather than surface-level understanding. Dr. Lutz remained with Amoco through its sale to INEOS. Over the years, his responsibilities have included collaborating with catalyst and product development teams to identify new products for customers, as well as developing and reviewing specs and operating conditions for impact polymers. Amid his distinguished career, Dr. Lutz considers his most notable achievement to be his extensive experience in resolving engineering challenges and enhancing production capabilities. For one, he transformed an existing plant that initially produced low-value products into one capable of producing more complex materials. The equipment modifications and
