29 Millennium - Twenty-fourth Edition ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT FOUNDER Diane Killeen Painting Studios New Orleans, LA CONTEMPORARY ARTIST Los Angeles, CA Millennium Magazine Featured Listee PHIL HAWKINS Phil Hawkins discovered contemporary art during an internship at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska. He was particularly captivated by how it stepped outside the boundaries of the traditional techniques he had learned and used while growing up. This marked a shift for Mr. Hawkins, and he was hooked from the beginning. Within a year of that experience, he participated in a group exhibition focused on installation art, cementing his interest in contemporary art. Now in Los Angeles, Mr. Hawkins creates sculptural works and largescale installations with metals, glass, resin and other mixed media. In 2015, he launched a jewelry line inspired by his work, which debuted through The Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including Best 3D Artist, Best Group and Solo Exhibitions, and a patent design award for his jewelry. Mr. Hawkins’ work reflects the integrity, passion and personal experiences that have shaped him. He aims to inspire people and to evoke the same feelings and experiences he had while creating his art, ensuring it serves a lasting purpose. Initially planning to become an art therapist, Diane Killeen realized after college graduation that the field was not the right fit. Her passion for art remained, though she was uncertain how to pursue it professionally. That is, until she discovered the decorative painting and restoration program at the City and Guilds of London Art School. Ms. Killeen is the founder of Diane Killeen Painting Studios. She is trained in the restoration of decorative painting, a discipline often associated with historical landmark properties. However, she applies her knowledge of such techniques to contemporary settings, working closely with architects and designers. An expert at restoration projects, Ms. Killeen received an Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation for her work on the Frederick Douglass Auditorium’s hand-painted ceiling by the Louisiana Landmarks Society. She has been recognized by the Smithsonian and featured in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s magazine. Ms. Killeen values the full creative process, drawing on her classical training while continuing to experiment with and adapt to different aesthetics. She is currently working on a bold, unconventional project in St. Barts that she finds exciting and fun. DIANE KILLEEN
