76 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY (now McDaniel College) in 1970, Mr. Wells served four years in the U.S. Navy as an electroencephalograph (EEG) technician. He then earned a master’s degree in biostatistics from Georgetown University in 1976. During this time, he applied for a data analyst position with the federal government, kicking off his celebrated career. Mr. Wells believes his willingness to give his best effort for every request contributed to his professional success. Throughout his career, he adapted to emerging technology to better connect with and serve the individuals who needed his assistance. He also excels at facilitating connections between different people. Now retired, Mr. Wells is furthering his studies in genealogy, human genetics and related fields such as animal phylogeny, which hold great interest for him as hobbies. He holds memberships with Ancestry and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. For Michael Wells, securing a position with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) was a practical and somewhat natural step following his service in the U.S. Navy. Prior experience in science and research contributed to his success and served as the foundation for a civil service career spanning more than three decades. Mr. Wells dedicated more than 35 years to the VA as a statistician, providing various statistical information to individuals and ensuring data accuracy. He also drafted letters on behalf of supervisors and served as the point of contact for follow-up inquiries. The position was an excellent fit for his ability to connect people with the appropriate sources of information. During college, Mr. Wells gained experience connecting with the public through various summer positions. These include roles in the shoe department at Montgomery Ward, in a department store, at the post office and in the furniture department of E.J. Korvette’s, a general store. He also had a brief service job at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, and later spent over a year at EG&G Mason, a company contracted by the National Institutes of Health.
