100 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Dr. Patrick Palmer joined the University of Chicago in 1968 and steadily rose through the ranks until attaining emeritus status in 2006. During his tenure, he served as an assistant, associate and full professor of astronomy and astrophysics. Prior to these appointments, he was employed by his almamater, Harvard University, as a radio astronomer for one year. Upon earning a BS from the University of Chicago in 1963, Dr. Palmer went on to achieve an MA and PhD from Harvard University in 1965 and 1968, respectively. He served as a visiting associate professor of astronomy at the California Institute of Technology and a visiting research astronomer at the University of Cambridge in England and the University of California Berkeley. Likewise, he has contributed articles on radio astronomical investigations of comets and interstellar media to technical journals. From a career filled with highlights, Dr. Palmer cites the discovery of formaldehyde in space to be a crowning achievement. Notably, he received the 1975 Helen B. Warner Prize and 1969 Bart J. Bok Prize for contributions to galactic astronomy. Likewise, he was an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow from 1970 to 1972. Ruben is a noteworthy physical chemist and educator who had accrued nearly 30 years of practiced experience in the field prior to his retirement in 2005. Notably, he served Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, as a research professor of biological sciences between 1977 and 2005. During his tenure, he also served as the editorin-chief of the international science journal “Microscopy Research and Technique” for 10 years. Likewise, he also served on the board of the journal “Synapse,” a peer-reviewed scientific journal of neuroscience. Dr. Ruben holds a BS in chemistry from the University of California Davis, as well as a PhD in physical chemistry from the University of California Berkeley, which he obtained in 1972. He has maintained affiliation with Sigma Xi, Microscopy Society of America and The Royal Microscopy Society. Though retired, Dr. Ruben still pursues his interest in understanding life, noting that life runs on chemistry, but also enjoys making jewelry in his spare time, working with amethyst, jade and other natural stones.
