An advocate of destigmatizing alcoholism and other substance use disorders, Dr. Lewis has served as chairman of the board of directors of the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence and as executive director of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse. Additionally, he is the founder and a board member of the Physicians and Lawyers for National Drug Policy and was a co-founder of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse, for whom he served as president and executive editor of its quarterly journal. Dr. Lewis received the 1997 Education and Research Foundation Award from the American Medical Association, 2002 Distinguished Contributions in Addiction Award from Harvard Medical School and 2004 John P. McGovern Award from the American Society of AddictionMedicine. After graduating magna cum laude from Brown University with a BA in 1957, Dr. David C. Lewis attended Harvard University, whereupon he wrote a term paper as a third-yearmedical student on addiction. Widely acclaimed, his paper was published in the NewEngland Journal of Medicine and he thereafter received anMD fromHarvardMedical School in 1961. After completing his medical training, Dr. Lewis served as the medical director for the Washingtonian Center for Addictions between 1972 and 1977 and became an associate clinical professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School in 1975. Likewise, he was also the director of the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse at Roger Williams General Hospital in Providence from 1976 to 1982. Hired by Brown University in 1976, Dr. Lewis first served as director of the Program in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, an associate professor of medicine and chairman of the Department of Community Health. Beginning in 1982, he served as a professor of medicine and community health and founded the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies. Notably, Dr. Lewis attained the title of Donald G.
