First serving as a staff nurse at the University Burn Center of the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston in 1977, he was soon recruited by the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, where he served to the rank of captain until 1981. During his time in the military, he was also a staff nurse and flight nurse in the U.S. Army Institute for Surgical Research. Upon his departure from the military, Mr. Rutan served in various clinical and research roles for myriad medical facilities, such as the Blocker Burn Center at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Shriners Burn Institute and University Physician Associates. He also flourished at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the New Jersey Medical School and the Burn Center of Westchester Medical Center, for whom he recently served as coordinator and clinical nurse specialist from 2013 to 2019. A former reviewer for Applied Nursing Research, he was also vice chair of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s NJMS Institutional Review Board, which he cites as a career highlight. Drawing upon a BSN and an MSN from the University of Texas, Mr. Rutan is a past member of the National Burn Victims Foundation. Presently, he maintains involvement with the American Nurses Association, the New Jersey Nurses Association and the American Burn Association. To attest to his nursing and military success, Mr. Rutan earned a Letter of Commendation from the U.S. Army and has been selected for inclusion in a plethora of Who’s Who publications. Married to his wife, Randi, since 1980, who has been a great mentor, Mr. Rutan has three children and two grandchildren. Attracted to the health care industry from a formative age, Thomas C. Rutan is a board certified advanced practice registered nurse who has been excelling as a nurse at the Vascular and Wound Care Center of the University Hospital of New Jersey since 2019.
