She was an instructor of GED preparation and English as a Second Language from 2004 to 2009 and an instructor of GED preparation at Troy Continuing Education from 1988 to 2009. Earlier, she taught at Lamar Elementary, Barnesville Elementary and Union Local Head Start, and served as an instructor and County Extension Agent with The Ohio State University. Mrs. Kinney pursued a formal education at The Ohio State University, receiving a BS in home economics and childhood development in 1956. She also completed coursework at the University of Dayton, Urbana University, Muskingum College and Ohio Wesleyan University. She has written over 15 books focusing on the history of Ohio cities and counties, including “Timeline of Bradford, Ohio, and the Railroad,” “Facts and History About Railroads from A to Z,” Johnny Appleseed, and many others. Lending her expertise in philanthropic efforts, Mrs. Kinney is former Queen and member of the Red Hat Society, past state president of the Ohio CowBelles, and member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association. She has served as a judge of 4-H projects in several counties, as well as being a 4-H advisor. She has dedicated time to the Bradford Railroad Museum as a trustee, Alpha Delta Pi as a past state president and the Oakes Beitman Museum as a past board member. Additionally, she invested a decade to have the sugar cookie denoted as the Official Cookie of the State of Ohio. Impressively, Mrs. Kinney is a car enthusiast and has driven a Dodge one-ton truck during a Texas open road race, averaging 90 miles-per-hour on an 85-mile round trip course. She enjoys traveling to Concours de Elegance events. She holds the track record at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for grandmothers over 80 years old. Interested in education from a young age, Virginia Lee Kinney is an eminent librarian and educator who served the Miami County Public Library in Pleasant Hill, Ohio, from 1978 until retiring in 2011.
