Published worked to his credit have included “Scientific Realism,” “Truth and Expression,” “Scientific Explanation and Atomic Physics,” “Basic Reasoning” and “Interpreting Physics.” Most recently, he penned “The Relevance of Philosophy” in 2018. He currently serves as an editor of the Philosophy Forum and was a reviewer for journals in philosophy, history of science, and theology. Dr. MacKinnon is a member of the American Philosophical Association, Sigma Xi and the Philosophy of Science Association. His career focused on educating, writing and speaking at conferences. In 1972, Dr. MacKinnon married Dr. Barbara MacKinnon, who was professor and chair of the philosophy department at the University of San Francisco and a very successful author. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Kathleen, and two grandchildren. Equipped with an interest in physics and philosophy since his undergraduate years at Boston College, Dr. Edward Michael MacKinnon earned a BA in philosophy in 1949. Then he joined the Jesuit Order. He received an MA in philosophy from Boston College in 1954. Receiving a second master’s degree in physics from Harvard University two years later, he subsequently obtained a PhD in physics from St. Louis University in 1960. From there, he attained an STL from Weston College in 1962 and was ordained a Catholic priest before studying at Yale University, where he was a postdoctoral fellow between 1963 and 1965. At the inception of his career in 1965, Dr. MacKinnon served as an assistant professor, associate professor and full professor at his alma mater, Boston College. In 1970, he resigned from the Jesuit Order and Boston College. Relocating to Hayward, California, he then served as a professor and department chair at California State University, East Bay. He resigned and attained emeritus status in 1997.
