66 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Richard Roche has always enjoyed interacting with and educating children, as well as taking part in sports. Particularly fond of basketball, he has excelled as an athletics coach and teacher for more than 30 years. Joining Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, in 2010, he has served as the director of athletics and head basketball coach since that time, as well as the boys’ varsity basketball coach since 2017. Earlier in his career, Mr. Roche served Saint Anthony’s High School as a social studies teacher and head basketball coach from 1988 to 1993 while concurrently serving the New York Institute of Technology and Farmingdale State College as an assistant men’s basketball coach. Between 1993 and 1994, he was an assistant basketball coach at Villanova University, whereupon he returned to Saint Anthony’s High School in 1994. Remaining with the accredited institution for the following three years, Mr. Roche joined the faculty of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where he was a head basketball coach from 1997 to 2006. Prior to attaining his present positions, he excelled as the district athletic director for Lindenhurst Public Schools from 2006 to 2010. Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Roche pursued a formal education at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1984. He then studied at Villanova University and earned a Master of Arts in education in 1994. Maintaining membership with the New Jersey Basketball Coaches Association, New Jersey High School Athletic Directors Association and Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey, Mr. Roche has received several Coach of the Year Awards over the course of his career. In his spare time, he volunteers with his local YMCA and the Special Olympics. Looking toward the future, Mr. Roche intends to experience the continued growth and success of his career at Notre Dame High School. He notes that although he appreciates his time spent with Notre Dame, he would not be opposed to directing athletic programs at the university level.
