78 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Supported by a BS in mathematics and MS in communication from Mississippi College, as well as a PhD in theoretical physics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dr. Ryan C. Fortenberry is a recognized voice in the sciences. Leveraging his innate curiosity about science, he has excelled as an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Mississippi since 2021. Joining the University of Mississippi in 2018 as an assistant professor, he previously served Mississippi College as an adjunct professor and Georgia Southern University as an assistant professor. Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Fortenberry completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the NASA Ames Research Center. Among his many achievements, Dr. Fortenberry is especially proud of his work “The First Molecule in the Universe,” which was published by Scientific American in 2020. Since the inception of his career, he has authored, co-authored and edited a myriad of other publications, contributed to professional journals and presented extensively in his field. For his excellence, Dr. Fortenberry has been honored with numerous alumnus awards, grants and research awards, including the 2021 Cliff Fortenberry Alumnus of the Year Award. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY University of Mississippi Oxford, MS While attending to her collegiate studies, Joyce M. Fortune desired to become an educator. After completing coursework at Rhode Island College and Providence College, she received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in 1973. Following her receipt of her degree, she thrived as a middle and high school teacher for the New England Christian Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts, for 28 years. During this time, Ms. Fortune returned to her alma mater and earned a master’s degree in 2012. She attributes her success to her psychology professor at the University of Massachusetts. Outside of her primary ventures, Ms. Fortune has volunteered with several organizations, including the Johnson Christian Academy, New Testament Christian School, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and American Veterans. As a testament to her success, she earned a Teacher of the Year Award from the Association of Christian Schools International in 1987. Despite her lauded achievements, however, Ms. Fortune considers a highlight of her career to be mentoring her students through writing poetry.
