A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 337 S ince graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, with honors, from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1950, Thomas E. Shipley Jr. has dedicated his career to being one of the foremost experts on technology and its continual advancement. He credits his initial interest in electronics and electrical engineering to his early service in the U.S. Navy, where he was selected to join the Fleet Airborne Electronics Training Unit and tasked with instructing Aviation Radio Men (ARMs) and officers in the operation of airborne radio and counter-measures equipment. Although he had initially intended to study music, his experiences in the military led him down a different career path. Upon being officially credentialed in the field, Mr. Shipley joined General Electric Company, where he served as an application engineer and product planner until 1965. He was transferred to Waynesboro, Virginia to work in the specialty control department as the move from electronic tubes to transistors began. This was a pivotal time for both the electronics industry and Mr. Shipley’s career. Following several years as a national sales manager with the Monarch Machine Tool Company, Mr. Shipley was recognized as the vice president of marketing with U.S. Industries, Inc., in 1973. He became the owner and president of the Machine Tool Sales Company in 1977 and has continued to maintain the business to this day. Over the years, Mr. Shipley has endeavored to share what he has learned through articles widely published by the trade press. His more recent written works have explored different areas of interest, such as cooking, U.S. history and economic progress. In the near future he will be releasing a new book through Stratton Press titled “The United States of America: The Most Successful Nation and People of All.” Mr. Shipley attributes his success to his parents for providing him with direction and a solid upbringing. Through them, he learned the value of reading, studying and working hard even at an early age. He is also grateful to his wife, Virginia, for her help in all things, whether related to family or business. THOMAS E. SHIPLEY JR. OWNER, PRESIDENT Machine Tool Sales Company Birmingham, MI
