A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 181 D r. Matthew Holden Jr. was born in the small town of Mound Bayou, Mississippi to parents Matthew and Estelle Holden. A former student of the University of Chicago, he obtained a BA from Roosevelt University in 1952, and an MA and PhD from Northwestern University in 1956 and 1961, respectively. After commencing his career as a faculty member at Wayne State University in 1961, he ascended the ranks to become an associate professor and full professor, ending his tenure with the university in 1969. Thereafter, Dr. Holden served the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant professor and the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a political science professor between 1969 and 1981. He also served the Public Service Commission in Madison, Wisconsin; the U.S. Air Quality Advisory Board; and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C. Upon his return to education, he served as a Wepner Distinguished Professor in Political Science at the University of Illinois Springfield, where he led public affairs studies on the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, from 2009 to 2015. Dr. Holden has been the Henry L. and Grace M. Doherty Professor of Government and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia since 1981. Dr. Holden is grateful for the opportunities he was presented for exchange throughout his career between education and real-world experience in the classroom. He has served on a variety of editorial boards and was also an editor of “Varieties of Political Conservatism” and the National Political Science Review. Holden was president of the American Political Science Association and the Policy Studies Organization and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as a Senior Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administrators. Dr. Holden has received honorary doctorates from Roosevelt University, Virginia Theological Seminary and Tuskegee University. The widower of the late Dorothy Amanda Howard Holden, he is the proud father of one son and one stepson. At present he is still working on major projects on the practice of power, the history and politics of the U.S. Department of Justice, and a new model of counter-emancipation.
